A growing share of online daters report experiencing "breadcrumbing", a pattern of sporadic messages that maintain interest without any real intention of commitment. A recent survey conducted by ClarityCheck among 1,247 adults across the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union found that 31% of respondents experienced breadcrumbing within the past six months, suggesting that intermittent digital attention has become a common feature of modern online dating culture.
The term describes a communication pattern in which one person sends occasional messages, reactions, or signals of interest while avoiding any meaningful progression of the relationship. While often subtle, the behavior can have tangible emotional consequences for those on the receiving end. According to the survey, 42% of respondents said breadcrumbing made them feel anxious or uncertain, while 28% reported temporarily disengaging from online dating platforms altogether after repeated experiences.
Messaging applications appear to be the primary environment where this behavior unfolds. 68% of respondents identified text messages or social media messaging platforms as the most common channel through which breadcrumbing occurs. The structure of these platforms, built around quick, low-effort communication, makes it easy to maintain minimal contact without clear intent or accountability.
The survey results also reveal notable generational differences. Among respondents aged 18-25, 45% reported experiencing breadcrumbing, making them the demographic group most affected by the behavior. By comparison, 29% of participants aged 26-40 reported similar experiences, suggesting that expectations around digital communication and relationship clarity may shift with age and dating experience.
Gender differences were relatively modest but still present. 33% of women reported being breadcrumbed, compared with 29% of men, indicating that the experience is broadly distributed across the online dating population rather than concentrated within a single group.

The ease of maintaining intermittent contact, sending an occasional message, reaction, or emoji, allows individuals to keep potential connections open without investing significant time or emotional commitment. The survey also examined how people respond once they recognize the pattern. 54% of respondents said they eventually stop replying after identifying breadcrumbing behavior, effectively disengaging from the interaction. Meanwhile, 21% reported turning to online verification or search tools to better understand who they are communicating with, reflecting a growing interest in verifying digital identities before investing further time in online relationships.
These behavioral responses highlight a broader shift in how people navigate digital interactions. As messaging platforms increasingly dominate early-stage relationships, users are developing new strategies to protect their time, attention, and emotional well-being.
With roughly one in three adults reporting recent experiences with breadcrumbing, the phenomenon appears to be moving from a niche dating complaint to a recognizable pattern of online behavior. The findings suggest that as digital communication continues to shape modern relationships, expectations around clarity, responsiveness, and intention may become central to discussions about responsible online etiquette.
