New survey data indicate a notable shift in how young women perceive trust, emotional effort, and social dynamics in their friendships.
A new survey conducted by ClarityCheck suggests that friendship dynamics among young women may be evolving in unexpected ways. In a study of 1,024 women aged 18 to 24, 61% of respondents said they feel greater trust toward male friends than toward female friends, pointing to a potential shift in how members of Generation Z evaluate emotional safety and reliability within their social circles.
While female friendships have historically been viewed as central support systems for young women, the survey indicates that many respondents perceive these relationships as more complex to navigate. 44% of participants described female friendships as "high maintenance" or emotionally stressful, compared with 22% who applied the same description to friendships with men.
Researchers increasingly point to the role of digital communication in shaping modern friendships. According to the survey, 58% of respondents said social media interactions frequently complicate friendships between women, citing factors such as social comparison, online group dynamics, and misunderstandings that arise through indirect communication.
By contrast, friendships with men were more often described as straightforward and lower in perceived emotional pressure. Respondents frequently associated these relationships with fewer expectations around constant communication, social coordination, or emotional interpretation.
The findings do not suggest that female friendships are disappearing. In fact, 69% of respondents said they still consider at least one female friend their primary confidante, highlighting that traditional support networks remain important even as perceptions of trust and ease evolve.
ClarityCheck’s analysis suggests that broader cultural and technological shifts may be influencing how young adults experience social relationships. Online platforms amplify visibility into others’ lives while simultaneously increasing opportunities for comparison and perceived exclusion, dynamics that can place additional strain on peer relationships.
These pressures appear particularly pronounced among younger users who have grown up with social media as a central layer of social interaction. As digital communication increasingly shapes everyday relationships, expectations around responsiveness, transparency, and emotional labor are also changing.
The survey results highlight how members of Generation Z are navigating friendship in a digital-first social environment. While male friendships may sometimes be perceived as simpler or less demanding, the data also indicates that close female bonds continue to play a crucial role in young women’s emotional support systems.
Taken together, the findings provide a snapshot of how trust, emotional expectations, and communication norms may be shifting within the social networks of younger generations.
