New internal survey highlights a quieter form of burnout driven not by work or screens, but by constant exposure to other people’s emotions.
A growing number of people report feeling emotionally exhausted not by their own lives, but by the emotional weight of others. According to new internal data from the Hint App, 58% of respondents say they feel regularly overwhelmed by the feelings, moods, and emotional needs of people around them. The finding points to a broader trend of compassion fatigue and empathy burnout, distinct from disengagement or apathy, and rooted instead in prolonged emotional exposure.
The survey, conducted among almost 4000 active Hint App users across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, suggests that emotional overload has become a private but pervasive experience. 64% of respondents said they struggle to distinguish between their own emotions and those they absorb from partners, friends, family members, or colleagues. 41% reported needing deliberate periods of emotional withdrawal after social interactions, even with people they care about.
Unlike the often-discussed decline in empathy during periods of social or political tension, this pattern reflects a different pressure point. Respondents did not describe indifference. Instead, many reported feeling overly attuned to others, to the extent that it disrupts their own emotional regulation. According to Hint App behavioral insights, usage of reflective tools peaks after relational interactions rather than during moments of conflict, suggesting that users are seeking ways to recalibrate after emotional exposure, not to avoid connection altogether.
Kirill Liakh, managing director of the Hint App, says the data reflects a shift in how emotional labor is experienced. “Now, this is not a lack of care. It is an excess of emotional responsibility. People feel accountable for managing not only their own inner states, but also the unspoken emotional needs of those around them. Over time, that creates fatigue, even among people who value deep connection.”
The trend appears especially pronounced among younger adults. In the survey, 67% of users aged 25-34 reported feeling emotionally drained by others at least once a week, compared with 49% among users aged 45 and older. Women were also more likely to report emotional overload, with 62% describing it as a recurring issue, aligning with broader patterns around emotional caretaking roles.
An anonymous astrologer working with the Hint App notes that many users arrive not seeking answers about the future, but language for what they are already feeling. “There is a recurring pattern of people who feel saturated by other people’s emotions. They are not avoiding relationships. They are trying to understand where their own emotional boundaries begin and end. Symbolic systems give them a way to name that experience without judgment.”
Hint App data shows that sessions focused on emotional differentiation and personal timing have increased by 29% over the past year, particularly following periods traditionally associated with heightened social interaction, including holidays and major life events. This suggests that emotional fatigue is not constant, but cyclical, intensifying during moments of collective expectation and closeness.
While compassion fatigue has long been discussed in caregiving professions, the Hint App findings indicate that similar dynamics are now present in everyday personal relationships. The data points to a quieter recalibration underway, as people search for ways to remain emotionally available without becoming depleted.
