As digital dating fatigue deepens, more than seven in ten Gen Z users now place greater trust in astrology than astronomy when navigating relationships, according to a new Hint App survey.
In an era of algorithmic matches and endless swipe fatigue, symbolic systems are gaining traction as emotional calibration tools, especially among Gen Z. A new survey conducted by Hint App of 3,400 active users, including 2,000 respondents aged 18-27, reveals that 73% of Gen Z participants said they trust astrology more than astronomy or traditional scientific frameworks when making romantic decisions.
This trust appears to stem not from a rejection of science, but from a need for narrative structure and emotional coherence, qualities many users report missing in contemporary dating platforms. Among Gen Z respondents, 70% said they felt "disconnected" from dating apps over the past year, and 58% described symptoms of emotional exhaustion tied to repetitive swiping and shallow conversations.
Hint App’s internal analytics confirm that these frustrations are transforming user behavior. In the past 12 months, searches for relationship insights within the app have risen by 34%, with over 450,000 compatibility reports and more than 300,000 interpretive sketches generated. The majority of these were initiated in response to emotional friction, users citing burnout, confusion about attraction patterns, or difficulty articulating values.
In a focused cohort analysis, Hint identified three core emotional drivers prompting users to seek symbolic insight:
- 50% reported persistent emotional burnout or numbness before reaching out for guidance (especially among users aged 24-30);
- 44% cited repetitive attraction to unavailable or inconsistent partners (most common in ages 18-24);
- 36% noted an inability to define or communicate long-term relational goals (prevalent in ages 26-35).
These motivations are rarely isolated; nearly two-thirds of users selected more than one. This overlapping emotional fatigue appears to accelerate the shift toward astrology as a reflective diagnostic tool rather than a predictive one.
Notably, among users who received a compatibility report and completed a follow-up survey within three months, 80% reported increased clarity about their own attraction dynamics, and 43% said they had entered a relationship they described as "stable" or "sustained" within six months of using the feature.
What emerges from the data is not just a shift in tools, but in purpose. Rather than using astrology to predict the future, younger users are repurposing it to understand recurring emotional themes and to reframe past relationship experiences. As Hint’s analysis shows, symbolic systems are being used to reconstruct personal narratives, providing emotional meaning where app logic offers only statistical possibilities.
This trend has strategic implications for both dating platforms and mental wellness services. The framing of romantic tools is evolving: users no longer simply seek matches, but frameworks that help decode the emotional logic behind those matches. As digital intimacy becomes increasingly fragmented, Gen Z is turning to systems that offer symbolic clarity, even when they defy empirical convention.
