New user survey data from Hint App reveals a growing trend of intentional relationship pruning, with nearly half of respondents severing ties in the past year, many driven by value misalignment and personal transformation.
As 2025 draws to a close, a recent user survey conducted by Hint App reveals a significant emotional trend: 46% of respondents reported ending a meaningful personal relationship this year. Of these, 32% involved the end of a close friendship, while 14% reported a romantic breakup. The figures, based on responses from 3,412 active users surveyed in October and November, reflect an 8-point increase over internal data gathered from a similar cohort in 2023.
Friendship dissolutions were most often attributed to shifting values (38%), recurring conflict or boundary violations (29%), and emotional distancing over time (21%). Additionally, 18% said their decision followed a major life transition, such as a career pivot, relocation, or a therapeutic breakthrough, underscoring how personal change often triggers relational reassessment.
The disconnection pattern reveals strong temporal clustering. Over 45% of respondents said the final decision followed a specific emotional event, a rupture, confrontation, or extended silence, rather than fading gradually. Users often described weeks of "emotional weighing" before acting, suggesting a prolonged internal buildup before severing ties.
This recalibration isn’t exclusive to romantic or familial dynamics. Hint App’s survey shows that 62% of users turn to the platform to reflect on love and relationships, while 23% focus on career decisions and 15% on health and vitality. For many, the symbolic language offered by astrology, palmistry, and other emotional insight tools serves as a structure for processing emotional ambiguity.
Though younger users (18-39) account for the majority of those initiating friendship reevaluations, older respondents (40+) were more likely to frame their decisions as permanent. Among older users, disconnections were described in terms like "life-phase mismatch" or "fundamental divergence," while younger users more frequently characterized them as "boundary resets" or "necessary pauses."
The survey also points to an evolving emotional vocabulary. Terms such as "energetic mismatch," "reciprocity fatigue," and "emotional labor imbalance" appeared repeatedly in user responses, reflecting how therapeutic and symbolic framings have entered common relational discourse. While only 18% of users reported speaking with a therapist in the same period, 41% described combining multiple forms of self-inquiry, including journaling, emotional tracking, and symbolic reflection.
This emerging pattern reframes disconnection not as social decay but as deliberate reconfiguration. Rather than passive withdrawal, many individuals appear to be exercising emotional agency, choosing smaller, more values-aligned circles and using symbolic frameworks to navigate those transitions.
