The survey indicates that identity disclosure now unfolds more slowly than in previous years. On average, respondents reported waiting 18 days before exchanging full identity details, including surnames or other traceable personal information. This gradual approach suggests that many users prefer to build a basic level of trust before sharing details that could make them easily identifiable online.
The trend is particularly pronounced among younger users. Among respondents aged 18-25, 78% said they prefer withholding their last name during early conversations, compared with 49% of users aged 35-45. Geography also appears to influence behavior. Survey responses indicate that users in major metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, are more likely to delay sharing personal details than those living in suburban or rural areas. Verification behaviors are also becoming routine. Caution extends beyond names alone. According to the survey, 44% of users said they would avoid sharing a real profile photo during the first two weeks of conversation, citing concerns about image misuse, harassment, or fraudulent accounts. Younger users and urban residents were again the most likely to adopt these strategies.
