As competition between AI companies intensifies, a new survey suggests many professionals are paying far less attention to which model powers their work than the industry may assume. Instead, convenience, speed, and workflow efficiency are becoming the defining priorities in enterprise AI adoption.
The race between artificial intelligence companies to build the most advanced large language model has dominated the technology sector for the past two years. Yet new data suggests the competition between model developers may matter far less to end users than many in the industry expect.
According to a new Use.AI survey of 5,800 professionals worldwide, a growing majority of workers now care less about which AI model they are using and more about whether the technology delivers reliable results inside a streamlined workflow. The findings point to a significant behavioural shift in how professionals engage with generative AI, suggesting that model branding itself may be losing relevance as the technology becomes embedded in everyday work.
The survey found that 61% of respondents no longer actively distinguish between individual AI models when completing day-to-day tasks, indicating that for most users, the identity of the underlying system has become secondary to the quality of the output. Meanwhile, 58% said they prefer using a single platform that provides access to multiple AI models, rather than switching between standalone applications.
That shift reflects a broader maturation of the AI market. In the early stages of mainstream adoption, users often experimented directly with tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, learning the strengths and limitations of each platform individually. But as AI usage becomes increasingly routine, many professionals appear to be moving away from model-by-model experimentation and toward consolidated systems that reduce friction and centralise access.
A further 55% of respondents said they no longer think about which model is completing a task, provided the output meets expectations. Another 52% said switching between different AI tools creates unnecessary workflow friction, reinforcing the idea that convenience is overtaking model preference as the primary driver of adoption.
“The clearest pattern emerging from the data is that professionals are no longer thinking in terms of individual models; they are thinking in terms of outcomes,” said Ihor Herasymov, Managing Director at Use.AI. “What matters increasingly is not whether a task is handled by GPT, Claude, or Gemini, but whether the system delivers the best result quickly, reliably, and within a seamless workflow. We are seeing model selection move further into the background as interface layers take on greater importance in shaping the user experience.”
The data suggests this trend may have significant implications for the broader AI market. If users become increasingly indifferent to model branding, the companies building underlying AI systems may find that technical performance alone is no longer enough to shape user preference, particularly as access to those systems becomes increasingly mediated through third-party platforms and unified interfaces.
That does not mean professionals no longer value access to multiple systems. In fact, 57% of respondents said they value being able to compare outputs from different models within one interface, suggesting that multi-model access remains important, but increasingly as a validation tool rather than a manual selection process. Users still want optionality, but many prefer it packaged inside one environment rather than fragmented across multiple platforms.
Only 34% of respondents said they still regularly use standalone AI tools for specialised or technical tasks, indicating that direct engagement with individual models is becoming more concentrated among power users and niche professionals rather than the broader workforce.
Taken together, the findings suggest the AI market may be entering a new phase in which technical competition between model developers remains fierce, but much of that complexity is becoming invisible to the average user. As happened previously with cloud computing, search infrastructure, and mobile operating systems, the underlying technology may remain highly contested while becoming increasingly abstracted away from the people using it.
For AI companies investing billions in model development, that may present a growing challenge: the more advanced the technology becomes, the less visible its distinctions may be to the people relying on it every day.
