New international survey data suggests automated accounts are reshaping everyday digital trust, as users grow more skeptical of who is really behind online conversations.
Nearly half of internet users now suspect that some of the accounts they interact with online are automated rather than human, according to a new global survey from ClarityCheck. The study, conducted among 6,792 internet users worldwide, found that 47% of respondents believe they have engaged with a bot while assuming they were speaking with a real person.
The findings point to a broader shift in online behavior: skepticism is no longer reserved for obvious spam or suspicious messages. Instead, uncertainty is increasingly shaping routine conversations across social media platforms, messaging apps, online communities, and digital marketplaces.
Users are also becoming more proactive in verifying identity. 41% of respondents said they had taken steps to confirm that someone they met online was human, while 57% reported that automated profiles are now harder to detect than they were two years ago. As AI-generated content, realistic profile images, and conversational automation become more common, distinguishing between real and synthetic accounts appears to be growing more difficult.
“Automation is no longer confined to obvious spam accounts,” said Ihor Herasymov, Managing Director of ClarityCheck. “Many people now approach online conversations with skepticism that did not exist even a few years ago. More sophisticated automated profiles are beginning to reshape how trust forms in digital communication.”
That change is increasingly visible in user behavior. 34% of respondents said they had searched for additional information about someone before continuing a conversation, while 29% said they had ended an interaction after suspecting the account might be automated.
Younger users appeared especially alert to the issue. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, 62% said automated accounts now seem significantly more convincing than in the past. Among users aged 40 and older, that figure fell to 48%. The gap may reflect higher exposure to fast-moving social platforms, creator ecosystems, and app-based messaging environments where unsolicited contact is more common.
The results arrive amid wider debate over AI-generated accounts, synthetic engagement, and automated messaging tools. While public discussion often focuses on political misinformation or large-scale scams, the survey suggests ordinary online interactions are also changing. Initial conversations, new followers, and casual messages are increasingly being filtered through a basic question: Is there a real person behind the screen?
ClarityCheck’s findings indicate that digital trust is becoming more conditional. As automated identities grow more convincing and easier to deploy at scale, users are responding by becoming more deliberate, more skeptical, and more likely to verify who they are actually speaking with. What was once a routine online exchange is increasingly becoming a small test of authenticity.
