Dating after divorce can expand the range of people someone is willing to consider, especially later in life. Dating apps are also giving some older adults a private setting in which to explore those changes.
For some divorced adults, starting over changes more than the search for a new partner. A new Hint App survey of 4,862 divorced adults across the US, the UK, Canada, the European Union, Australia and Latin America found that 38% say the people they are interested in dating now are different from those they would have considered when they married.
The pattern becomes more pronounced later in life. Among divorced adults aged 50 and over, 31% say they have explored a romantic or sexual attraction they had never acted on during their marriage. Another 24% say their current dating preferences would surprise the person they were when they married.
The findings suggest that the end of a marriage can change the range of relationships some people are prepared to consider. They do not establish that an earlier marriage concealed a different identity or that a newly explored attraction had always existed. What they capture directly is a shift in dating preferences after divorce.
Among respondents whose preferences changed, 57% say that before their marriage ended, they had never seriously considered dating someone of a gender they had not previously dated. 42% say they became more willing to experiment with dating after divorce without deciding in advance what their next relationship should look like.
Dating apps appear to give some respondents room to explore that change privately. Among those who explored a new type of relationship after divorce, 46% say dating apps made it easier to investigate the possibility before discussing it with people they knew offline. Among respondents aged 50 and over, the figure was 39%.
People returning to dating after a long marriage can remain surrounded by relationships formed during it. Friends may have known them primarily as part of a couple, while family expectations can continue after the marriage itself has ended. A dating profile creates a separate setting in which someone can adjust preferences and begin conversations before deciding whether a new interest will become part of their offline life.
“Marriage does more than organize a relationship. Over time, it can also narrow the set of choices a person imagines themselves making,” says Kirill Liakh, Managing Director at Hint App. “After divorce, some people are encountering preferences that were never part of the decisions available to them before. What changes first may be the range of possibilities they are willing to test, while the language they use to understand those choices comes later.”
That distinction is relevant to how later-life dating is usually understood. A person can explore a previously unconsidered attraction without adopting a new identity, and a change in dating preferences does not provide a retrospective explanation for a marriage that came before it.
The survey instead points to continued flexibility in partner choice well into adulthood. For some people over 50, returning to dating means entering it with a wider range of possible partners than they had before marriage.
The change can be significant even when it never results in a new label. After divorce, some adults are discovering that the boundaries around whom they might date are less fixed than they once assumed.
