Personalization is becoming a visible part of everyday interaction as AI makes individually tailored responses immediate and easy to produce. New survey findings indicate that this is beginning to influence how people judge services that still have to work largely the same way for everyone.
Personalization used to be easiest to notice when a system recommended something based on previous behavior. AI has made the experience more direct. A person can now ask for an explanation, plan, or recommendation and receive an answer shaped around the specific request within seconds. The interaction creates a simple expectation: a service can recognize context and respond accordingly.
That expectation appears to be extending beyond the technologies that made it familiar. Hint App conducted a survey of 7,846 adults across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, Australia, and Latin America to examine how people respond when an experience feels personally relevant and when it does not.
The clearest difference appears in behavior. 59% of adults said they have chosen a different product or service because the alternative felt more personally suited to them, while 54% said they are more likely to abandon an experience when it feels designed for “everyone” rather than for people like them. 68% said generic experiences feel disappointing once they have become accustomed to personalization.
The survey also points to a difference in expectations by age. In an internal analysis of the responses, 61% of adults under 35 said they expect businesses and services to remember their preferences, compared with 43% of adults aged 55 and over. Across the full sample, 51% expected their preferences to be remembered, while 47% said they become frustrated when they have to repeatedly explain what they want or need.
The gap matters because many services cannot personalize themselves as freely as a digital interface can. A restaurant still needs an offering that can serve a large customer base. An educational institution cannot build a separate course around every student. Travel providers, fitness services, and employers face similar constraints when individual preferences meet systems designed around scale.
The survey indicates that consumers are increasingly judging standardized experiences against a reference point created by individualized ones. A service can deliver what it promises and still feel less satisfactory if another option appears more responsive to the person using it.
This changes the competitive value of personalization. Its advantage is no longer limited to making a recommendation more accurate. Remembering a preference, retaining context or reducing the need to repeat information can influence whether an experience feels attentive enough to continue using.
The distinction also helps explain why dissatisfaction with generic experiences does not necessarily mean that consumers expect complete customization. The survey responses point instead to sensitivity around signs that an experience has recognized the individual at all. Full individualization is expensive and sometimes impractical; evidence of relevance can be much smaller.
“Good enough for everyone” is therefore facing a stronger comparison with “right for me.” Standardized services have not suddenly become less functional. The environment around them has changed, and consumers have more opportunities to experience systems that acknowledge who is using them. A generic experience can lose appeal even when its underlying quality stays the same, because the absence of recognition has become easier to notice.
