With hiring slowing, people who lose work face an uncertain search and difficult conversations at home. New survey findings show how shame, family expectations and familiar daily habits can shape what others know about unemployment.
In a labor market where employers are reluctant to hire, losing a job can mean entering a search without a reliable timetable. Household expenses continue, while family members and friends may still assume that working life has remained unchanged. The gap between someone's employment status and what others know can persist well beyond their last day at work, adding a private strain to an already uncertain situation.
A Hint App survey of 4,286 users across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the European Union and Latin America, including 2,164 respondents who had lost a job within the previous three years, found that 58% told their partner on the same day they lost their job and 24% within a week. For the remaining 18%, the conversation took longer or never happened.
The sequence changed outside the immediate household. Among those who had lost a job, 37% named a parent as the last person they told, while 31% named a friend. Shared expenses can make disclosure to a partner necessary, while conversations with parents or friends may feel easier to postpone. Telling them can also create expectations for updates when the person searching for work has little progress to report.
The emotional barriers help explain why those conversations can be difficult. Shame or embarrassment was cited by 46% of respondents as a barrier to disclosure, while 28% feared how other people would react. Employment often serves as a visible marker of independence and stability. Its loss can change how people believe they are perceived, even when their circumstances reflect decisions beyond their control.
Kirill Liakh, Managing Director of Hint App, said: "There is a familiar script for announcing a promotion. Losing a job offers no equivalent. Even a caring response can turn immediately to solutions, when the person telling the news may still be trying to understand what happened. That can make an ordinary conversation feel like another demand at a moment when someone has very little control over what happens next."
The uncertainty can also extend into daily behaviour. Among respondents who had lost a job, 42% said they continued some element of their usual routine, such as leaving home at their normal time. Maintaining a schedule may provide structure during an unpredictable job search. It can also make unemployment less visible to people accustomed to seeing someone leave for work each morning. The survey does not establish how many respondents maintained these habits specifically to conceal their situation.
That distinction leaves room for different experiences behind the same behaviour. Someone may continue leaving home to concentrate on applications elsewhere or maintain a sense of normality. For a person who has delayed disclosure, the familiar routine may also postpone questions they are unprepared to answer. The outward appearance can remain unchanged while the circumstances behind it have shifted considerably.
The findings expose a difficult feature of prolonged employment uncertainty: conversations with loved ones can become harder when the person affected cannot offer a clear account of what happens next. Support may be available, but accepting it can require explaining a situation that remains unresolved.
The result is an uneven experience of job loss within personal relationships. A partner may already be adjusting shared finances while parents or friends remain unaware that employment has ended. By the time the news reaches them, the person who lost their job may have spent weeks adapting to a reality that others have yet to discover.
