Everyday AI assistants are becoming a private outlet for people in committed relationships. New findings suggest that some users are comfortable sharing personal information with AI while holding their partners to different expectations.
Among people who had told an AI something they had never shared with their partner, 51% said they would feel uncomfortable, hurt, or angry if their partner did the same. The finding, drawn from a Use.AI survey, points to an emerging tension in relationships: people may have different expectations for their own private conversations with AI and those of their partners.
The issue is becoming more relevant as AI assistants find their way into ordinary personal routines. A request for help writing a difficult message can develop into a conversation about the relationship behind it. Unlike conversations with another person, these exchanges require no separate arrangement or shared social connection. The assistant is already available for practical tasks, making personal disclosure a natural extension of its everyday use.
The survey covered 5,672 adults in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, European Union, and Latin America who were in committed relationships. Three in four described the AI they used most as a tool or helpful assistant, while 12% regarded it as something like a friend. Another 13% described it as someone they felt emotionally close to, or as something romantic.
Among these 1,418 respondents who regarded AI as a friend or closer, 63% had disclosed something they had not told their partner. Money worries were the most common subject, followed by frustrations with a partner. Career plans also featured among the disclosures.
Partners were not always aware of these interactions. Within the same group, 38% reported that their partner did not know at all, while another 24% said their partner knew only some of it. Around three in ten said their partner knew and was comfortable with it.
The most revealing contradiction emerged among the 893 respondents who had shared information with AI that they had withheld from their partner. 51% expressed discomfort at the prospect of their partner behaving similarly. Their responses suggest that some users regard their own AI conversations as an acceptable form of personal privacy while applying a stricter standard to their partner.
Yet these interactions were rarely associated with reported relationship damage. Among respondents who confided in AI, 41% said their relationship had improved since they started, compared with 6% who reported deterioration. Others saw no change or were uncertain. These self-reported assessments do not establish whether AI caused the changes.
Use.AI users are likely to be more comfortable with AI than most people, and their age and gender mix is unlikely to match the countries surveyed. The findings therefore describe this group rather than people in relationships generally. They also reflect respondents' accounts of their own behavior.
The results highlight an unresolved question of reciprocity within relationships. Private reflection has always existed outside conversations between partners, but AI gives that reflection an interactive form, with responses that can encourage further disclosure. The survey suggests that people may accept this arrangement for themselves without extending the same freedom to someone they love. As AI becomes a routine place to work through personal concerns, disagreements over trust may depend increasingly on whether partners recognize the same boundaries for each other.
