New data suggests emotional fatigue is replacing optimism as the dominant mindset heading into 2026, with individuals focusing less on transformation and more on coherence.
As 2025 draws to a close, new internal research from the Hint App reveals a marked shift in public sentiment. Instead of cautious hope, many report a sustained sense of emotional fatigue, uncertainty, and diminishing belief that the future will improve.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Hint App among 7,438 active clients across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, 82% said they feel more hopeless about the future compared to last year, while only 9% reported increased hope. The remaining 9% saw no meaningful change in outlook.
The findings point to what Hint App internally defines as a post-optimism phase. This is not an acute crisis, but a quieter erosion of belief that effort will reliably yield progress. Unlike the sharp anxiety spikes recorded during earlier global disruptions, this emerging mood appears steadier, more reflective, and embedded in daily decision-making.
When asked to explain their outlook, users most frequently cited prolonged economic pressure, emotional exhaustion from constant adaptation, and a fading sense of long-term stability. 58% named financial insecurity as their primary concern, while 46% referenced relationship strain or difficulty sustaining emotional connection. 39% said they feel unable to plan beyond the short term, even when external conditions appear stable.
Hint App’s internal usage data mirrors these trends. Over the past year, the platform recorded a 27% increase in sessions related to emotional timing, decision paralysis, and relationship clarity, and a simultaneous decline in interest in future forecasting or outcome-driven guidance. Sessions tagged to post-therapy reflection, breakups, and major life transitions saw the sharpest rise in the final quarter of 2025.
Kirill Liakh, managing director of the Hint App, describes the trend as a form of psychological recalibration. “Many clients no longer expect reassurance that everything will improve,” he said. “They’re not disengaging, but reorienting, toward endurance, not transformation.”
Open-ended responses gathered during the survey support this view. Many users describe themselves as functional but emotionally flat, capable of meeting obligations while questioning the meaning behind forward motion. Hope, they report, now feels conditional, dependent on short-term emotional stability rather than long-range aspiration. This language appeared consistently across age groups, with only minor differences between users under and over 40.
Importantly, the decline in hope does not indicate apathy. 71% of users said they still actively seek tools for emotional self-understanding. What has shifted is the role of those tools: fewer expect motivation or predictive reassurance, while more look for structure, validation, and clarity around personal limits.
As 2026 approaches, the Hint App’s findings suggest that emotional focus is turning inward. Rather than chase narratives of recovery, many are choosing to maintain coherence within an uncertain future. In this climate, emotional clarity replaces optimism as the more sustainable resource, redefining how individuals engage with change, time, and personal agency.
