New Use.AI data finds a pronounced gap in perceived responsibility between people who act on an AI recommendation and those who do not. The pattern is strongest when users seek confirmation, proceed after receiving support and later invoke AI to defend the decision.
Adults who follow AI advice are about twice as likely to say they feel less responsible for the outcome, according to a Use.AI survey of 8,600 adults across the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
Among respondents who acted on an AI recommendation, 49% reported a reduced sense of personal responsibility, compared with 24% of those who did not follow the advice. Across the full sample, 36% said AI advice had made the result feel less entirely their own.
The findings suggest that AI’s role in decision-making may extend beyond helping users compare options. Its involvement can also shape how people interpret their ownership of a choice after it has been made.
Decision fatigue appears to be an important part of that process. 58% of respondents said they had turned to AI because they felt mentally exhausted by weighing different options, while 51% had used it to make a difficult choice feel simpler or more manageable.
For many users, the value of AI may lie less in superior judgment than in its ability to reduce repeated deliberation. A system can organise competing arguments, outline possible consequences and provide a recommendation within seconds. That efficiency can help a user move forward, but it may also create distance between the person making the decision and the reasoning behind it.
That distance is visible even when users believe they do not need outside help. 47% said they had followed an AI recommendation for a choice they felt capable of making independently. Among those respondents, 46% reported feeling less responsible for the outcome, compared with 27% among the rest of the sample.
The data also points to a more selective form of reliance. 39% had rephrased a question after receiving an answer they disliked, while 33% had consulted another AI tool after the first challenged their preferred course of action. Respondents who had changed the prompt or switched systems were more likely to report reduced responsibility, at 47%, compared with 28% among those who had not.
This pattern is consistent with users treating AI not as an independent decision-maker, but as a source of external validation. The user still controls the prompt, chooses which response to accept and decides whether to act. Yet once the system supports a preferred position, its recommendation can make that position feel more defensible.
That effect becomes more pronounced when AI support changes behaviour. 42% said they were more likely to proceed after an AI system endorsed their position. Within that group, 52% reported feeling less responsible for the outcome, compared with 24% among respondents whose willingness to act had not increased.
The largest gap appeared among people who later used AI to explain their actions. 31% said they had cited an AI response while defending a decision to someone else. Of those respondents, 61% felt less personally responsible for the result, compared with 25% among those who had not referred to AI in their defence.
Reduced responsibility was also more common among frequent AI users, at 44%, compared with 29% among occasional users. Respondents using AI for complex decisions reported the same feeling more often than those using it for routine choices, at 42% and 31%, respectively.
The findings are based on self-reported behaviour and do not establish that AI directly reduces personal responsibility. They do, however, show a consistent association between diminished ownership and deeper forms of reliance: following a recommendation, seeking a more agreeable response, acting after receiving support and invoking the system when the decision is challenged.
The decision remains the user’s. The data suggests that the perceived responsibility for its consequences may not feel as individual as it once did.
