New Use.AI research suggests that rapid replies, status updates, and constant online visibility are becoming informal measures of performance, even when they interfere with the work employees are expected to complete.
More than half of employees have sent an unnecessary workplace message solely to demonstrate that they were working, according to a new Use.AI survey of 15,842 working adults across the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Latin America.
The finding reflects a growing tension in digital workplaces. Employees are increasingly judged not only by the quality and timeliness of what they produce, but also by how quickly and consistently they appear available.
That pressure is showing up in formal workplace conversations. 42% of respondents said their response speed had been discussed at least once during a performance review or a conversation with a manager. Another 29% said they had been criticized for replying too slowly despite completing the underlying task well and on time.
The results suggest that responsiveness is increasingly being treated as a performance signal, even when it has little bearing on the quality of the work itself.
Employees appear to be adapting their behavior to that expectation. 68% said replying quickly makes them appear more committed than colleagues who take longer to respond. 59% worried that managers or co-workers would assume they were not working if they remained silent for too long.
In digital workplaces, professional visibility is often built from small signals: green status dots, typing indicators, read receipts, meeting cameras and the time between a message and its reply. None offers a reliable measure of productivity. Yet together, they can shape how present, attentive or committed an employee appears.
That perception is changing how people use their time. 52% of respondents said they had sent an optional message or status update solely to show that they were working. 48% said they interrupt focused work to check or answer messages at least 3 times during a typical working day.
The pressure also extends beyond normal working hours. 53% said they had replied to workplace messages during evenings, weekends or annual leave because they did not want to appear unavailable.
Employees also reported seeing consequences for career progression. 33% had observed a more responsive or visible colleague receive a new opportunity even when that person’s results were no better than those of others. Separately, 44% believed the fastest responders were more likely to be promoted or trusted with new responsibilities, regardless of the quality of their work.
Artificial intelligence may be compressing expectations further by reducing the time required to draft emails, summarize information and produce routine updates. Among daily users of workplace AI tools, 62% said expected response times had become shorter, compared with 38% among respondents who use AI for work less frequently.
The comparison does not establish that AI caused the shift. It does indicate that employees working most closely with AI-enabled communication are considerably more likely to perceive rising expectations around speed.
“AI is making routine communication almost effortless, but that convenience is also compressing expectations around response times,” said Ihor Herasymov, Co-Founder & CEO of Use.AI. “We risk mistaking responsiveness for productivity.”
Fast communication can be essential in roles where delays carry practical consequences. But the survey points to a broader culture in which silence is increasingly interpreted as disengagement, even when it reflects concentration.
As routine communication becomes easier to produce, the visible signs of work may become less reliable measures of the work itself. A rapid reply can signal attention, urgency, or access to better tools. On its own, it cannot show who contributed most.
