Travelers are using artificial intelligence to scrutinize destinations before booking, giving AI an increasingly direct role in which places survive the planning process.
Artificial intelligence is influencing travel decisions well before travelers reach a booking page. In a new Use.AI survey, 62% of respondents said they had removed a destination from their shortlist after discussing it with AI, showing that conversational tools are already affecting which trips remain under consideration.
The survey of 13,684 adults across the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Latin America found that respondents frequently use AI to investigate potential drawbacks before committing to a trip. 73% said they had asked AI why they should not visit a destination they were considering, while 71% had asked it to identify the biggest drawbacks of a holiday before booking. Another 68% said they had asked whether a destination was truly worth the money.
These interactions place AI deeper in the decision process than a conventional recommendation query. Travelers can ask about recurring complaints or whether a destination offers reasonable value for the cost. They can also test a place against concerns that matter specifically to them, then continue the conversation as those concerns become more specific.
Use.AI describes this type of behavior as elimination-first decision-making, referring to the use of AI to remove weaker choices during travel research. The most consequential finding is the point at which research becomes action: 62% of respondents said a destination had left their shortlist after an AI conversation.
The behavior reflects a practical problem created by the abundance of online travel information. Search engines, booking sites and social platforms have made it easy to accumulate options, while deciding between them can still require hours of comparison. Generative AI gives travelers a way to examine an individual choice in detail and ask follow-up questions around price, expectations or potential sources of disappointment.
Ihor Herasymov, Co-Founder & CEO of Use.AI, said the broader significance lies in the role AI could play in the final stages of decision-making.
“AI will increasingly be judged by the quality of the decisions it helps people make. A useful system should help someone recognize when a destination, purchase, or opportunity no longer makes sense for them before they commit money or time. Search has spent years getting better at finding relevant choices. AI adds the ability to examine those choices until people are confident about which ones deserve to remain”.
Travel offers a clear setting for this behavior because a holiday can involve substantial spending and limited vacation time. Flights and accommodation may also become costly to change once booked, raising the value of identifying problems earlier in the planning process.
The survey is limited to travel behavior and does not show whether consumers use AI in the same way when making decisions in other categories. Within travel, however, the results indicate that AI is already affecting the composition of the shortlist itself, rather than serving only as another source of information.
For travel companies, that creates a different kind of search environment. Destinations may increasingly be evaluated through private conversations in which an AI system is asked to surface weaknesses before a traveler ever reaches a booking platform. For consumers, the outcome is simpler: AI is becoming part of the process that determines which options are still worth considering when it is time to spend.
