Conversational AI is beginning to occupy a new place in everyday communication: the space between having a private thought and deciding whether another person needs to hear it.
For people who already use AI regularly, the appeal is no longer limited to productivity. The same assistant that helps draft a message or work through a problem can also provide an immediate response when another person is unavailable, when a concern feels too minor to raise, or when a thought has not yet been shaped into something worth sharing.
A survey of 9,842 American adults by Use.AI found that 17% say they currently have zero close friends. The figure does not establish that people without close friends are more likely to turn to AI, but it provides an important backdrop: access to close human relationships is uneven at the same time conversational systems are becoming easier to use for personal exchanges.
Among adults who regularly use AI, 14% say an AI assistant is one of the first places they would turn if they needed someone to talk to late at night and did not want to contact another person.
The stronger pattern appears in the role of immediacy. Thirty-one percent of regular AI users say they have contacted an AI assistant simply because they wanted an immediate response rather than waiting for a friend, partner, or family member to become available. Among 18-29-year-old regular AI users, the share rises to 43%.
Those responses suggest that AI is entering a familiar social calculation. Contacting another person requires some judgment about timing and whether the conversation is worth initiating. An AI assistant removes much of that friction. A user can begin writing without first deciding whether someone else is available or whether the thought is developed enough to justify reaching out.
The same pattern appears in more sensitive conversations. Use.AI found that 22% of adults who use AI for personal conversations have shared something with an AI that they would have felt uncomfortable immediately telling someone they know.
That finding gives the technology a role beyond simple availability. For some users, AI can become a preliminary place to formulate a concern before deciding whether to bring it into a human relationship. The survey does not show whether those conversations later reach another person, or whether using AI makes people more or less likely to seek human support. It does show that a portion of users are already placing personal material there first.
This distinction is important because the social effect of conversational AI may not depend on whether people describe it as companionship. The more immediate change is procedural. A private thought can now be expressed, answered, and developed before another person becomes involved.
The survey cannot determine what repeated use will mean for friendship, intimacy or social isolation. It identifies a narrower shift that is already measurable: for a meaningful share of regular AI users, another person is no longer the only immediate destination for a thought they want to express.
That creates a new layer in everyday communication. Some conversations now begin before a friend, partner, or family member ever knows there was something to discuss.
