For employees who work regularly with AI, the definition of a well-set task may be changing. New Use.AI findings show that younger users expect more structure from managers and often find it harder to explain the reasoning behind AI-assisted work.
A manager can consider an assignment clear while an employee sees the same brief as incomplete. AI is adding another layer to that familiar workplace tension. Systems built around prompts encourage users to specify the desired output before work begins, and frequent exposure to that process can alter what people regard as enough information to start a task.
A Use.AI survey of 11,742 adults across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, Australia and Latin America found a pronounced age gap among people who already use AI regularly. Among regular AI users aged 18 to 28, 62% said they prefer managers to give highly specific instructions, including clear steps, defined parameters and an indication of what the finished result should look like. Among regular AI users aged 40 and older, 41% said the same, a difference of 21 percentage points.
The survey does not establish why that gap exists. Because both groups already use AI regularly, however, the finding shows that age differences remain even within an AI-using population. Younger users appear to have a higher threshold for how much structure a manager should provide before work begins.
That expectation becomes more significant when the task requires judgment that cannot be reduced to the final output. 44% of regular AI users aged 18 to 28 said they have found it difficult to explain the reasoning behind work they completed with AI assistance, which, for employers, can make it harder to determine whether an employee understands the assumptions behind a result and can apply the same judgment when the circumstances change.
The survey also suggests that younger AI users are developing a different relationship with information itself. 57% of regular AI users aged 18 to 28 said they are less likely to deliberately memorize information when they know they can retrieve or generate it with AI. Ready access to information can make recall less central to completing a task, even though many forms of professional judgment still depend on knowledge that can be used without first consulting a tool.
Routine work creates another point of friction. 53% of young regular AI users said ordinary workplace tasks feel disproportionately frustrating when they know AI could complete them in seconds. That response puts pressure on managers to distinguish between work whose value lies mainly in producing an output and work that is still useful because performing it develops familiarity or judgment.

Managers now have to be much clearer about whether they need the result or whether the task itself is meant to develop the employee.”
These findings describe a workplace where speed and competence can become harder to separate. A detailed brief may help an employee produce stronger work, while excessive specification can also remove opportunities to decide how a problem should be approached. AI can make information easier to retrieve and outputs faster to produce, while employers still need ways to assess whether the person using it understands the work well enough to explain, adapt and defend it.
For managers, the survey suggests that the quality of an assignment can no longer be judged only by whether the objective seems clear to the person giving it. Younger regular AI users are asking for more explicit direction, and a substantial share also report difficulty explaining the reasoning behind AI-assisted work. The gap between those two findings is where the management problem becomes most visible.
