AI assistants are entering the shopping process before consumers have decided that a purchase is worth making. For some shoppers, that means using AI to test the claims and impulses behind a buying decision before reaching the checkout.
A consumer who sees a product in an advertisement can now question it almost immediately. An AI assistant can assess whether a feature is useful for that person, whether the price premium is justified, or whether the purchase solves a problem they actually have. The effort required to challenge a buying impulse has become small enough to fit into the same conversation in which the product is being considered.
New research from Use.AI, based on a survey of 12,947 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the European Union, and Latin America, found that 41% of regular AI users said an AI conversation had changed their mind about a purchase they had initially intended to make. The survey measures reported behavior rather than observed spending, so it cannot establish how much AI changes overall consumption. It does show that reconsidering a purchase has become a recognizable use of the technology among regular users.
The questions consumers ask help explain what is changing. 52% said they had asked AI to assess whether a product’s advertised benefits were genuinely meaningful. 47% had asked it to explain why they might not need something they were considering buying.
This gives AI an unusual role in the purchase journey. Product discovery tools generally help consumers choose among available options once some intent to buy already exists. A conversational assistant can also examine whether the reasons behind that intent hold up. Someone considering a more expensive phone, appliance, or subscription can ask whether the additional features would materially improve their own experience. The answer may weaken the case for spending before the consumer reaches checkout.
Consumers believe this scrutiny affects how easily they can be persuaded. 58% of regular AI users said AI had made them harder to convince into buying something because they could interrogate a product before committing to it. That figure describes users’ perception of their own behavior, although the survey also records the more specific actions behind that perception: challenging advertised benefits and asking for reasons not to buy.
For retailers, this creates another test for product claims. Marketing still has to persuade the consumer, while the claims themselves may increasingly be examined by an assistant asked to judge whether a feature is useful or a higher price is justified. A message built around aspiration or urgency can be subjected within seconds to a more practical question: what, exactly, would this product change for the person considering it?
The longer-term issue is who influences that evaluation if AI becomes a routine checkpoint before spending. Ihor Herasymov, Co-Founder & CEO of Use.AI, said the incentives behind the assistant will become increasingly important as consumers rely on it to assess commercial claims.
“If AI becomes the place where people test a purchase before they make it, consumers will need to know whose interests are shaping the answer. A recommendation can appear objective even when commercial incentives sit behind it. The independence of the assistant may become part of the purchase decision itself.”
That introduces a new pressure on retailers. Products may increasingly be judged in a setting where claims can be tested against a buyer’s circumstances before persuasion turns into payment. The advantage will favor products whose price and usefulness remain convincing after that scrutiny.
The Use.AI findings suggest that AI is beginning to influence an earlier stage of commerce than product selection alone. If consumers continue to use assistants this way, retailers will face a market in which winning attention is only the first test. Their products will also have to survive an on-demand assessment of whether the consumer should spend the money at all.
