AI is creating a private layer around financial decision-making, allowing people to develop investment ideas and income plans before a partner knows they exist. New Use.AI findings show how that private process is entering conversations about money, trust, and disclosure inside relationships.
AI assistants give people a private space to explore financial decisions before those decisions appear in an account, transaction, or household budget. Someone can assess an investment or develop a business idea without involving another person while the idea is still taking shape. By the time the subject reaches a partner, much of the thinking may already have happened.
A Use.AI survey of 7,216 adults in relationships across the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the European Union, and Latin America found that 51% would rather tell their partner they had an affair than disclose the full extent of their personal debt. The result points to the sensitivity of debt disclosure inside relationships, even when compared with admitting a serious personal betrayal.
The survey also found privacy around the process of making financial decisions. Among partnered adults who use AI for financial or business-related tasks, 28% said they had used AI to research, plan, or make a financial decision without telling their partner. Another 19% said they had kept an investment activity separate from their partner after using AI to help evaluate it.
The findings do not show that AI causes people to hide financial activity. They do show that AI is already part of decisions that some people choose to keep private. Financial secrecy can therefore begin while a decision is still being formed, before it produces a visible transaction or commitment.
The pattern extends to income earned outside primary employment. Among partnered respondents with an additional source of income, 17% said they had used AI to help develop or operate income that their partner did not fully know about. The survey captured uses including evaluating business opportunities and supporting work connected to additional earnings.
Private financial thinking does not automatically amount to deception. People often explore uncertain ideas before deciding whether they are worth discussing. The issue becomes more consequential when a private process creates debt, investment risk, or financial obligations that affect someone else in the household.
Ihor Herasymov, Co-Founder and CEO of Use.AI, said AI can also change how much influence a partner has over a decision before it becomes real.
“AI lets someone develop a financial idea much further before bringing another person into the conversation. By the time it is shared, a partner may be responding to a nearly finished plan rather than helping shape the decision from the start.”
Financial transparency may therefore depend on more than whether a partner eventually learns about an account, investment, or source of income. It can also depend on when they are brought into the decision and whether they still have a meaningful opportunity to influence an outcome that could affect both people.
As AI becomes part of ordinary financial planning, couples may need to define where private exploration ends and shared financial responsibility begins. The survey suggests that for some people, that boundary is already being tested before money moves.
