AI assistants are becoming a routine part of how children work through school problems in private. A Use.AI survey suggests that repeated use is also making some of those systems feel increasingly personal.
AI assistants now sit alongside search, messaging and other familiar digital tools in children’s daily lives. For schoolwork, they can offer explanations on demand and give children a private place to ask questions they may hesitate to raise with another person. As children return to the same systems, some parents are beginning to see signs that those interactions are becoming more personal.
A Use.AI survey of 4,872 parents of children aged 8 to 17 across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the European Union, and Latin America found that 27% say their child has given an AI assistant or chatbot they use for schoolwork a name.
Naming an AI system does not establish that a child sees it as a companion. The survey suggests, however, that personalisation is appearing alongside repeated use and a willingness to bring AI questions that may feel harder to ask elsewhere.
Among parents whose children use AI for school-related tasks, 34% say their child has asked an AI assistant to explain something they were reluctant to ask a teacher about. Another 29% say their child repeatedly returns to the same AI assistant because it “explains things better” than other sources.
Parents often have an incomplete view of those exchanges. 39% say they do not know what their child regularly talks about with an AI assistant, while 24% say their child appears more comfortable asking AI certain questions than asking an adult.
The format helps explain some of that appeal. A child can repeat a question without having to manage another person’s reaction. Sensitive subjects can also be raised privately. The conversation remains available whenever the child chooses to return to it, without requiring another person to be present.
That leaves parents with visibility without access. They may know that an AI assistant is being used for schoolwork while having little sense of what keeps drawing their child back to the same system or which subjects feel easier to discuss there.
Repeated use can create familiarity even when the underlying technology is general-purpose. The same assistant a child uses to clarify an assignment can also become the place they return to when they are confused, embarrassed, or uncertain about asking someone else.

The important signal is the pattern of reliance: when a child starts returning to the same system, trusting its explanations and choosing it for questions they avoid elsewhere, the relationship with the technology has changed.”
The Use.AI findings suggest that AI use among children is increasingly shaped by preference as well as utility. Some children are choosing the same assistant repeatedly and giving it an identity of its own, while parents may see only the visible surface of that behavior.
For families, the name a child gives an AI assistant may be one of the clearest signs that a general-purpose tool has acquired a more personal place in how that child asks for help.
