As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly common in hiring, applicants are using it to remove signs of age and seniority from their résumés. A survey suggests they are more concerned about how human recruiters will judge their experience than how automated systems will assess it.
Artificial intelligence is changing what employers see long before a job application reaches the screening stage. Candidates concerned that their age could disadvantage them can use AI tools to shorten career histories, remove graduation years, and revise descriptions of senior positions. The technology makes it easier to adjust how experience is presented, raising questions about how much professional history applicants feel comfortable revealing.
A survey of 4,263 Use.AI users in the US, UK, Canada, and the European Union who applied for a job in the past 12 months found that 42% had removed or changed details on their CV or LinkedIn profile to appear younger or less senior. Changes included graduation years, early jobs, senior titles, and profile photos. The practice, sometimes described as résumé Botox, can alter how an employer interprets a candidate's career without necessarily changing the underlying qualifications.
The tendency was especially pronounced among older women. 53% of women aged 45 and over reported making such changes, compared with 35% of men in the same age group. The 18-percentage-point difference suggests that concerns about how age affects professional credibility may be experienced differently by women and men, although the survey does not establish what drives that disparity.
The reasons applicants gave also complicate assumptions about automated hiring. Among those who had edited their profiles, 56% said they believed human recruiters would filter them out, while 38% expressed the same concern about AI screening. Respondents could select both explanations. Their answers reflect expectations of bias rather than evidence of how frequently either form of screening rejects applicants.
Attitudes toward AI screening were more varied across the full sample. 28% believed it treated applicants their age less fairly than human recruiters, while 25% considered it more fair and 33% saw little difference. Concern about automated assessment exists alongside a substantial degree of confidence in its fairness relative to human judgment.
AI has also become a practical means of responding to those concerns. Among respondents who changed age-related details, 72% used AI to make the edits. Tools that can condense employment histories and rewrite professional summaries reduce the effort involved in presenting a shorter career. In doing so, applicants may also remove evidence of expertise or accomplishments that could otherwise strengthen their applications.
Some respondents associated the adjustments with improved outcomes. 43% of those who edited their profiles reported receiving more interview invitations afterward, compared with 10% who reported fewer.
Removing a graduation year may conceal an applicant’s age without changing how qualified they appear. Cutting early jobs or downplaying senior titles carries a greater cost: it can erase evidence of experience from the very document employers use to assess it. The survey suggests that applicants are willing to make that trade-off because of how they expect recruiters to judge them, with AI making the edits easier to carry out.
